Protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar intensified in New Delhi on Sunday, with police detaining protesters as they attempted to march towards Jantar Mantar for the third consecutive day.
The demonstrations, involving student activists and opposition-linked groups, are centred on allegations of irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police have deployed heavy security and imposed restrictions on gatherings around central Delhi, while hundreds of protesters have been detained during the three-day agitation.
The Election Commission has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and defended the voter-roll revision as a measure to remove duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries. The protests are expected to continue, with opposition parties planning further demonstrations in the capital.
