A Dhaka court on Sunday denied bail to Azan Ali Sharif, a teenager detained in connection with the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim in a car accident in the capital’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 Judge Md Abdul Moktadir passed the order after hearing the bail petition.

The teenager’s lawyer, Advocate Alamgir Hossain, sought bail, while state counsel Mohammad Sharif Uddin Mamun opposed the plea. The judge observed that releasing him so soon could send a “negative message to society”. Earlier, on September 24, the court had sent the teenager to a juvenile development centre after rejecting his bail petition. He has remained in detention since then.

According to investigators, CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas showed Azan emerging from the driver’s seat of the private car shortly after the incident.
