At least 10 people, including four campus journalists, were injured after activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal allegedly launched an attack in front of Shahid Ziaur Rahman Hall at Rajshahi University (RU) on Sunday (October 4) night.
Following the incident, RU Proctor Mahbubur Rahman admitted administrative failure to contain the situation, stating that police officers fled the scene out of fear.
The severely injured journalists were identified as Jahidul Islam of Dainik Agamgir Somoy, Nur Ahsan Mridul of The Daily Star, Arif Uzzaman Korban of bdnews24, and Mainul Islam Raju of Dainik Samakal.
Witnesses reported that around 8:00 PM, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists marched from the university transport market toward the hall premises carrying native weapons including machetes, hockey sticks, iron pipes, and baseball bats, allegedly targeting Hall Union GS Ariful Islam.
When campus reporters attempted to record videos of armed activists, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal members physically assaulted them, snatched mobile phones, and threatened others.
RU Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Sultan Ahmed Rahi blamed Islami Chhatra Shibir for provoking the incident and described the assault as an "unfortunate misunderstanding," promising an internal investigation.
However, RU Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Vice President Ahsan Habib claimed on social media that activists merely resisted "undercover Shibir operatives" disguised as journalists.
