A major fire broke out on a road in Chhatak town under Sunamganj district on Sunday afternoon following a gas pipeline leak, disrupting vehicular movement for nearly an hour.
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM on the road in front of Jalalia Madrasa in the town, causing widespread panic among locals and commuters as flames erupted on the main thoroughfare.
According to local sources, construction work on a four-lane road stretching from Chhatak Town Traffic Point to the Pagla Hasan Roundabout had begun about a week ago. The underground gas pipeline was damaged and leaked during excavation work carried out by the contractor using heavy excavators and payloaders.
Firefighters rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after nearly an hour of continuous effort, following which traffic movement on the road resumed.
Chhatak Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Sub-Assistant Engineer Md. Juned Mia confirmed the incident, stating that the matter has been officially reported to higher authorities for necessary action.
