The body of Stamford University student Syed Sadman Joy, 22, was recovered from the Mrigi River in Sherpur nearly 26 hours after he went missing.
A diving team from Jamalpur Fire Service recovered the body from the Bhataraghat area of Bhatshala Union in Sherpur Sadar upazila around 6:30 PM on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Syed Sadman Joy, son of Ohedunni alias Makhon Mia of Kurigram, was a second-year student of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Stamford University in Dhaka.
According to local sources, he went to the bank of the Mrigi River at Bhataraghat with a friend on Saturday afternoon. While they were there, a team from the Department of Narcotics Control conducted an anti-drug drive in the area.
During the drive, Joy’s friend was arrested with drugs. He was later sentenced to imprisonment by a mobile court and sent to jail.
The family claimed that Joy, frightened by the drive, ran away and jumped into the river. He remained missing since then.
Family members and local residents searched the river and surrounding areas for him. Later, when they sought police assistance, police informed the Jamalpur Fire Service.
A diving team from the Jamalpur Fire Service began a rescue operation in the Mrigi River on Sunday afternoon. The team recovered Joy’s body around 6:30 PM.
Police took necessary preparations after the victim’s family sought assistance, and Joy’s body was later recovered with the help of the Jamalpur Fire Service diving team.
The body was being prepared to be sent to the district headquarters hospital for autopsy, she said, adding that further legal action was underway.
