Teachers remain respected by the state throughout their lives because of the dignity of their profession, whether they are serving or retired, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said on Monday.
He made the remarks at a discussion marking World Teachers’ Day at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.
Tarique said teachers serve as role models for students after they move beyond the family environment, and the government is working to help them fulfil that role confidently.
He stressed the need to modernise education in line with the growing use of social media and artificial intelligence, saying technical and practical education has become essential.
The prime minister said the government has introduced a modern curriculum and is promoting “learning with happiness” to make education more engaging for students.
He said education should not focus only on employment but also on building morality and character. Values such as honesty, responsibility, empathy, patriotism, humanity, discipline and respect for others should be integral to education.
Tarique said the government is taking steps to ensure teachers’ financial security and make teaching a competitive profession in terms of opportunities and dignity. He added that attracting the country’s brightest people to teaching should be a priority.
