A Dhaka court on Monday remanded two airline staffers for five days in a case filed over the seizure of 9.34kg of gold bars at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The accused, Manik Mia and Mizanur Rahman, were arrested after customs intelligence officials recovered 80 gold bars concealed inside their shoes on the runway on Sunday.
The two were working on Emirates flight EK582, which arrived in Dhaka from Dubai. The seized gold bars, weighing around 117 grams each, were valued at approximately Tk 16.25 crore.
Airport police Inspector Abul Quayum, also the investigating officer in the case, produced the accused before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court and sought a 10-day remand. After hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain granted five days.
During the hearing, the judge asked Manik where they had obtained the gold. He replied that he had found it on a seat inside the flight. When asked how, he said it had been lying there.
The case was filed at Airport Police Station on Sunday under the Special Powers Act by Ruhani Islam, Assistant Revenue Officer of Customs at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle at the airport.
