Five people, including a sub-assistant engineer of the West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL), were injured in a clash between electricity customers and an official at a power office in Monpura upazila of Bhola on Monday.
The incident took place around 11:30AM at the WZPDCL office near Dakbangla intersection. The injured were WZPDCL Monpura Sub-Assistant Engineer Md Moniruzzaman Monir and four local traders — Md Sharif, Md Akter, Sohag and Nirob.
According to eyewitnesses, residents of Monpura have been receiving electricity for only around two hours at night out of the 24 hours. Frustrated over the prolonged power shortage, several customers went to the electricity office around 11AM on Monday to complain about the situation. An altercation broke out between the two sides and later turned into a physical clash, leaving the engineer and four customers injured. Police later went to the office and brought the situation under control.
Following the incident, traders of Hajirhat Bazar held a procession and rally demanding action over the alleged assault of the four customers and submitted a memorandum to the acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Monpura. On the other hand, the electricity office filed a case at Monpura Police Station alleging an attack on the office and assault on the engineer.
The injured customers — Sohag, Nirob, Sharif and Akter — alleged that they receive only one to one-and-a-half hours of electricity at night and that Engineer Monir demanded extra money for extending the supply. They alleged that he would disconnect the power line if they refused to pay. They said the engineer assaulted them and tore their clothes when they went to the office with their complaints, and demanded a proper investigation and action against him.
Sub-Assistant Engineer Monir denied demanding any extra money, saying the power supply was being disrupted because of mechanical problems. He alleged that the customers attacked him without listening to him and said the electricity office had filed a case with the police.
WZPDCL Monpura Residential Engineer Md Faridul Islam said two of the three machines at the power house were out of order and electricity was being supplied somehow using the remaining machine. He said customers should not have assaulted officials at the office and that legal action had been taken against those involved. Efforts are also underway to resolve the electricity crisis in Monpura, he added.
Monpura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mazaharul Islam said police rushed to the electricity office after being informed and brought the situation under control. A case had been filed over the alleged attack on the office and assault on an electricity official, he said, adding that legal action would be taken following an investigation.
Acting Monpura UNO Torit Chandra Shil said traders had submitted a memorandum alleging power disruptions and assaults on customers. He said efforts were underway to resolve the issue after discussions with both sides.
