Representatives of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Raksu) formed a human chain on Monday protesting the alleged attack on journalists, vandalism of students’ rooms and what they described as administrative inaction at Rajshahi University.
The human chain was held under the banner of Raksu on Paris Road on Monday afternoon.
Raksu VP Mostakur Rahman Zahid alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked students and vandalised their rooms on Sunday, describing the incident as a resurgence of muscle-based politics at the university following the July uprising.
He further alleged that the incident showed that Chhatra Dal, like Chhatra League, regarded students and journalists on campus as its opponents.
Zahid warned that students would launch a movement similar to the “July 16” movement if the administration failed to arrest those involved in the alleged attack. He also urged the administration to meet their demands quickly.
Raksu AGS Salman Sabbir alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked journalists and students with the backing of the university administration, comparing the incident with attacks previously carried out by Chhatra League.
He said he had contacted the administration several times and requested action, but claimed its response indicated a lack of concern over the alleged attack.
Sabbir further alleged that no action had been taken even three to four hours after the incident and accused the administration of delaying the process by citing an investigation.
He called on the administration to resign if it was unable to discharge its responsibilities and urged it to immediately accept all demands raised by journalists.
The incident took place around 8:30 PM on Sunday in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall while several journalists were performing their professional duties. Four journalists were seriously injured, while several others were also injured.
