A Chhatra Dal leader accused of attacking journalists at Rajshahi University has described a section of journalists as “Gupto Shibir” and said he would consider any action against him as proof that “bot” influence is strongest in Chhatra Dal and BNP.

Ahsan Habib made the comments in a social media post on Monday, a day after Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were accused of attacking journalists and students with locally made weapons at the university.

The incident took place around 8:30 PM on Sunday in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall. At least 10 people, including four journalists, were injured.

In his post, Habib claimed that when Chhatra Dal activists went to apprehend Ariful Islam, the elected general secretary of the hall’s Raksu unit, a group identifying themselves as journalists attacked them. He claimed that the Chhatra Dal activists then “resisted” the attack.

Habib described a section of journalists as “Gupto Shibir” and alleged that a large section of the media was pro-Jamaat. He also made several allegations against Ariful Islam and described him as a former Chhatra League leader and follower of Salauddin Ammar.

Habib further said that if any “unjust decision” was imposed against him, he would believe that there was no place in Chhatra Dal for dedicated, persecuted, brave and competent leaders and that “bot” influence was stronger in the organisation.

The attack took place while several journalists were performing their professional duties in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall. Four journalists were seriously injured.

The injured journalists include Samakal’s Rajshahi University correspondent Mainul Islam Raju, The Daily Star correspondent Nur Ahsan Mridul, bdnews24.com correspondent Arifuzzaman Qurban and Agamir Shomoy correspondent Zahidul Islam. Zahidul is receiving treatment after sustaining a serious head injury.

Following the attack, journalists at the university demanded the identification and prompt arrest of those involved and exemplary punishment.

The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism also observed a class boycott and organised a human chain protesting the attack.

The hall administration filed a case against unidentified people over the incident. The central Chhatra Dal has also formed an investigation committee to look into the incident, according to reports.
