KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, Oct 5:  Mobile phones are no longer merely a means of communication; for many, they have become an addiction that can be more dangerous than yaba, said ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan, MP for Laxmipur-4 (Ramgati-Kamalnagar) and whip of parliament.

“Excessive use of mobile phones can impair eyesight and cause various health problems. It can even affect the brain,” he said while addressing the final of a football tournament organised by Nasirganj Warriors Club in Kamalnagar Upazila on Saturday evening.

Nizan urged young people to reduce their dependence on mobile phones and become more involved in sports.

“We cannot remain glued to our mobile phones. We have to break free from mobile addiction and focus on sports,” he said.

He said participating in sports alongside studies would help young people remain physically and mentally healthy.

The whip said the government was considering building a mini stadium in every union to encourage young people to take part in sports and spend more time on playing fields.

Referring to the role of young people in political movements over the years, Nizan said youths had been involved in movements and struggles for 17 years.

He said students and members of the public had contributed to democratic movements and the establishment of democratic values, adding that they had also helped facilitate the formation of a government through a free and fair election.

“We are grateful to all those students and members of the public,” he said.

Kamalnagar Upazila BNP President Nurul Huda Chowdhury and General Secretary M Didar Hossain were present as special guests at the event.

Officer-in-Charge Faridul Alam, Upazila Jubo Dal Convener Yusuf Patwari, Char Martin Union BNP President Ali Ahmad, local BNP leaders, elected representatives, sports enthusiasts and people from different walks of life were also present.
Later, the champion and runners-up teams were awarded trophies.
