Bangladesh squandered a promising start and were bowled out for 234 on the opening day of their two-day warm-up match against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai on Sunday, leaving the side with plenty to address before next week's Afghanistan Test.
The Bangladesh innings appeared to be heading towards a sizeable total when Soumya Sarkar and Shadman Islam put together a century opening partnership. The pair added 108 runs before the stand was broken, providing Bangladesh with the platform they had wanted from their only warm-up game ahead of the Test.
Shadman scored 46, while Soumya made 57 before retiring. Their departure, however, triggered a prolonged period of pressure on the Bangladesh batting order.
From a comfortable position, Bangladesh began losing wickets regularly and were reduced to 164 for five. The middle order struggled to convert the good start into a substantial total, leaving the lower order with the task of rescuing the innings.
Nayeem Hasan provided some resistance with a useful 36, helping Bangladesh move beyond the 200 mark, but the innings eventually ended at 234.
The UAE then faced 16 overs before the close and reached 34 for one. Bangladesh therefore retained a narrow advantage at the end of the opening day, although the home side's disciplined response prevented the visitors from gaining complete control of the match.
The two-day fixture is Bangladesh's main competitive preparation before their one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, beginning on October 9. With the warm-up providing the batsmen an opportunity to spend time at the crease, the collapse after the opening stand will be a particular area of concern for the team management.
The match is also giving Bangladesh an opportunity to assess their players in UAE conditions before the Test, where patience and the ability to build long innings will be crucial.
Bangladesh will resume on the second day looking to put pressure on the UAE and extract as much value as possible from the final day of their Test preparation.
