A house belonging to a 57-year-old man accused of attempting to rape a five-year-old girl was vandalised and set on fire by local residents in Kalkini, Madaripur, on Monday.
The incident took place in Madhyarchar village under Saheberampur union between 6pm and 8pm. Police later went to the spot and brought the situation under control, while firefighters extinguished the blaze.
According to the victim’s family and police, the child was allegedly left alone at home recently when Habul Shikder attempted to rape her. After the allegation became known in the area, Habul went into hiding.
The victim’s family also alleged that people acting on behalf of the accused had been pressuring them to settle the matter and refrain from filing a case.
Angered by the incident, more than 500 local residents joined the victim’s family in a broom procession on Monday evening, demanding the accused’s arrest and punishment.
After the procession, protesters went to Habul’s house and vandalised it. At one point, the house was set on fire.
Kalkini police reached the scene after receiving the information and brought the situation under control. Firefighters later put out the fire.
The child’s father said he had filed a complaint with the police, alleging that Habul had attempted to rape his daughter.
Habul Shikder and members of his family were not found at their home when contacted for comment.
Kalkini Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahirul Alam said police were sent to the scene after the house was set on fire.
“The situation is currently calm. Legal proceedings in the case are underway,” he said.
