BNP leader Mizanur Rahman Swapan, president of Ward 28 of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar thana BNP, was detained on extortion allegations in the capital on Monday.
The Special Response Battalion-2 (SRB-2) detained him from the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area and later handed him over to the police.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn Mizan confirmed the detention, saying SRB informed police that Mizanur was detained over extortion allegations.
Police and SRB sources said Mizanur faces allegations of extortion in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur, including collecting money from garment factories, operating an ambulance syndicate at the National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital, extorting money from roadside vendors in Agargaon and collecting monthly payments from drug dealers in a slum near Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
