A two-month-old girl died while receiving treatment at Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex in Noakhali on Monday, leading to tension and vandalism at the hospital.
The child, Fatema Hasan Rimi, was taken to the hospital after her family said she had measles. They alleged that her condition worsened after she was given an injection and saline. The family also said the hospital told them there was no oxygen available.
Rimi died around 3 PM. Angry relatives later damaged parts of the hospital, blaming medical negligence for her death.
Police went to the hospital and brought the situation under control. The UNO and police chief also visited the hospital and assured the family that the incident would be investigated.
Health official Dr Shahreen Akter said the child had been sick for about a month and was brought to the hospital in critical condition. She said the child may have died after breast milk entered her airway while she was receiving saline. She also said the child had pneumonia symptoms, while it was not confirmed whether she had measles.
An investigation committee will be formed to look into the death and the vandalism, she said.
