A man’s house was vandalised and set on fire in Madaripur’s Kalkini after he was accused of attempting to rape a five-year-old child, prompting hundreds of locals to stage a broom procession demanding justice.

The incident took place at Madherchar Sahebrampur village under Sahebrampur Union on Monday (October 5) evening.

Police sources said, Habul Shikdar, 57, allegedly attempted to rape the child after finding her alone at home. Locals said he went into hiding after the allegation became public.

The victim’s family alleged that people acting on behalf of Habul pressured them not to file a case and tried to settle the matter. The allegation sparked anger among local residents.

Around 500 villagers later joined the victim’s family in a broom procession demanding justice. When the procession reached Habul’s house after passing through several roads, some participants vandalised the property and later set it on fire.

Police from Kalkini Police Station went to the scene and brought the situation under control. Fire Service personnel from Kalkini Upazila later extinguished the fire.

The victim’s father said Habul attempted to rape his daughter and that he had filed a complaint with the police.

Habul Shikdar and his family members were not found at their home when contacted for comment.
