An accused in a murder case escaped from Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court premises on Tuesday, marking his second such escape, police said.
The accused, Shariful Islam, 22, fled while being taken to the court lock-up after appearing before Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jamsed Alam, according to Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Prosecution Division Mahiuddin Mahmud Sohel.
Shariful had been brought to court for a hearing in a case filed over his previous escape. The hearing could not take place as the prosecution witness was absent.
After the proceedings, DMP constable Abdul Alim was escorting Shariful from the courtroom to the lock-up when he allegedly managed to remove his handcuffs and fled the court premises.
Shariful had previously escaped on June 19, 2025, while being taken to the lock-up from the courtroom of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Dhaka. He allegedly assaulted police personnel and removed his handcuffs before fleeing. A case was subsequently filed against him by the then lock-up in-charge, Md Ripon Molla, with Kotwali Police Station.
Police said efforts were underway to recapture Shariful and expressed hope that he would be arrested soon.
The latest incident comes days after another accused, Raja alias Pichchi Raja, escaped from a prison van. An investigation into that incident reportedly found the involvement of police personnel, several of whom have since been arrested.
According to Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Israel Hossain, the investigation found that an SI allegedly removed two prisoners from the van at Tantibazar and later helped stage a false account of the escape.
