US visa applications may be rejected if applicants fail to provide their social media information, the US Embassy in Dhaka said.
The embassy also warned that applicants could become ineligible for US visas in the future.
The embassy made the disclosure in a post on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday.
“For US national security purposes, failure to provide social media information on your visa application may result in visa denial and may make you ineligible for a US visa in the future,” the embassy said.
In an earlier message, the embassy advised visa applicants to be completely truthful during their visa interviews and not conceal any past or present violations of US immigration law.
It said consular officers are fully informed about applicants’ previous records, including any violations of immigration laws. Applicants were therefore advised not to provide false information or attempt to conceal any relevant details during interviews.
“Tell the truth in your interview. Lying can result in you being barred from entering the United States,” the message said.
The embassy’s warning comes as some applicants may attempt to conceal previous visa refusals, overstays or other immigration-related issues when completing visa applications or during interviews.
The embassy said such information can be detected through its databases and screening processes. If an applicant is found to have concealed relevant information, they could not only lose their visa but also face a long-term or permanent ban on entering the United States.
