A 14-year-old girl in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, has allegedly been raped repeatedly by her step-grandfather for nearly a year under threats of murder, with her family saying a medical examination recently revealed that she is around seven months pregnant.

The accused, Raich Uddin, 55, son of deceased Nader Uddin of Raydanga village under Kaya Union, allegedly raped the girl after threatening to kill her. Locals reportedly detained him and informed police on Tuesday morning after the allegations became known, but he fled before police reached the scene.

According to police and the girl's relatives, her mother died of cancer about 12 years ago, after which her father remarried. The girl's stepmother later sent her to the house of her step-grandfather. The family alleged that Raich Uddin sexually assaulted the girl repeatedly when she was alone at his house and threatened her with death to prevent her from disclosing the abuse.

The allegations came to light after the girl recently complained of abdominal pain. Her relatives took her to a local gynaecologist, who initially suspected a tumour but later, according to the family, informed them that she was around seven months pregnant.

Following the disclosure, locals reportedly detained Raich Uddin and called police, but he managed to escape before officers arrived. The girl and her grandmother are currently in police custody, while arrangements have been made for the girl to undergo a medical examination, police said.

The girl's grandmother alleged that Raich Uddin had raped her granddaughter repeatedly for nearly a year after threatening to kill her. The girl's maternal uncle said the family had come to the police station to file a case and seek justice.

Kumarkhali Police Station OC Jamal Uddin said, "the accused had fled, while the girl had been taken into police custody for a medical examination. A rape case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act is being processed, he said, adding that details would emerge after investigation."
