A new gas discovery has been made in a recently drilled well in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali, with preliminary estimates suggesting the well could supply around seven million cubic feet (MMcf) of gas per day to the national grid.
The state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) confirmed this on Tuesday (October 6) afternoon after drilling was completed at the Sundalpur-4 appraisal-cum-development well in Boro Charigaon village of Nabipur Union.
Mohammad Mozammel Haque, project director of the Sundalpur-4 well, said a Drill Stem Test (DST) is currently underway to assess the well’s gas-bearing potential.
''The DST is now in progress. Once it is completed, we will be able to determine the total gas reserve in the well.''
BAPEX officials said preliminary estimates indicate that the well could add approximately 7 MMcf/d of gas to the national grid.
Drilling of the well began on July 28. According to BAPEX, the well was drilled to a depth of 1,578 metres using a directional drilling technique and a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system.
Gas indications were detected in the 1,420–1,460 metre zone, according to BAPEX sources.
The final reserve estimate and production potential will be known after completion of the DST and subsequent evaluation.
