Man awarded death penalty for murder in Kaptai

A Rangamati court has awarded death penalty to a man named Mohammad Mahibur Kamal alias Mohibullah for murdering a woman in Kaptai in 2022. 

The court also fined him Tk 50,000. It is the second death sentence handed down by the Rangamati District and Sessions Judge’s Court.

Rangamati District and Sessions Judge’s Court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday (October 6). The convict was present in court when the verdict was delivered and was later ordered to be sent to jail.

According to the case documents, the murdered woman Hasina Begum alias Sumi went missing after leaving her rented house at Dubasi Bazar in Rangunia for Kaptai New Market after the evening of March 11, 2022.

Her body was recovered on the following day from an abandoned toilet beside the BFIDC Model Government Primary School in Chandraghona-Kaptai Union under Kaptai Police Station. Investigators found signs of injuries on different parts of her body as well as evidence that the body had been burned.

Amena Begum, mother of Sumi–filed a murder case with Kaptai Police Station on March 13, 2022, under Sections 302 and 201 of the Penal Code.

Following the initial investigation, a charge sheet was submitted to the court on October 29, 2022. Later, following an application by the complainant, the case was handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for further investigation.

After completing its investigation, the PBI submitted a charge sheet against the same accused on January 9, 2024.
