A devastating fire has gutted the historic 'Jholmol Cinema Hall' and around 15 to 20 nearby shops in Gouripur municipality of Mymensingh.
The fire broke out at around 2:15AM on Wednesday at the cinema hall in the municipal area. Four units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control at around 3:40AM, after nearly two hours of efforts.
Purna Chandra Mutsuddi, assistant director of Mymensingh Fire Service, said an LPG cylinder warehouse, a decoration shop and a used-clothing store, along with around 15 to 20 other shops adjacent to the cinema hall, were completely destroyed in the fire.
Fire Service officials initially suspect that the blaze may have originated at the LPG cylinder warehouse.
The exact extent of the financial losses will be determined after a detailed investigation, officials said.
Jholmol Cinema Hall had been operating for years from a historic former zamindar mansion, making it a notable landmark in Gouripur.
