Japan is providing a $145,000 grant to expand tuberculosis (TB) detection in Dhaka slum areas.
The grant agreement was signed at the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka between Ambassador Saida Shinichi and representatives from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), according to an embassy press release issued on Wednesday (October 7).
Funding is provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Japanese government. The project will acquire a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Fujifilm portable digital X-ray unit to enable mobile medical teams to reach underserved communities directly.
Approximately 9,000 people will be screened annually under this program, helping connect previously undiagnosed TB patients with immediate treatment while reducing transmission risks.
Ambassador Saida Shinichi stated that human security is central to Japan's efforts to protect human life and dignity. Toyota Tsusho Corporation Vice Chairman Ichiro Kashitani also attended the ceremony, with Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Fujifilm set to provide technical training for operating the vehicles and equipment.
Since 1989, Japan has supported 224 NGO projects in Bangladesh through the GGP scheme, totaling approximately $17.8 million in aid.
