National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has called for a new Ganges water-sharing agreement with India, saying the existing deal should not simply be renewed.
Speaking at a memorial meeting at Palashi Chattar on Wednesday, he demanded a guarantee clause to ensure Bangladesh’s fair share of water and equal participation in river management.
He said the 1996 Ganges Water Sharing Treaty will expire in December and urged the government to secure minimum water flow during the dry season. He also called for fair water-sharing agreements for the Teesta and other common rivers.
Nahid said Bangladesh’s sovereignty and national interests must be prioritised in relations with India.
