BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has expressed hope that the newly formed committee of the Bangladesh National Road Transport Workers Federation will play an effective role in curbing extortion and illegal activities in the transport sector.
While speaking to journalists on Thursday morning after paying floral tributes and offering Fateha at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, Rizvi said the new committee would work to end what he described as 'mafia rule' surrounding the country’s transport sector.
The programme was organised by the newly elected committee of the Bangladesh National Road Transport Workers Federation.
Rizvi said the transport sector would be restructured through new ideas and initiatives.
He said the sector’s longstanding deadlock would be overcome, illegal practices would be brought under control and new standards would be established in passenger services.
He also called on politicians to play a responsible role in preventing political disorder.
“If given responsibility, the 17-year period of anarchy will come to an end.''
