A Khulna City Corporation (KCC) driver was killed on the spot after being crushed between two vehicles at the KCC garage near the city's Power House intersection on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 11:15AM when Md Abdus Salam, 45, a KCC driver, was crushed between a garbage truck driven by another KCC driver and an excavator parked in front of it. The driver of the garbage truck, Barek Gazi, fled the scene.
The deceased, Salam, was the son of Md Mecher Ali from the Moylapota area under Sonadanga Police Station. His body is currently at the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue.
Md Safayet Hossain, another KCC driver, said that shortly before 11:15AM, Barek entered the garage driving a garbage truck and asked Salam to move the vehicle he was operating. Salam replied, asking Barek to move the truck instead. When Barek attempted to start the engine, the vehicle lurched forward. Salam had, for some reason, positioned himself between the truck and another vehicle, an excavator, parked in front of it. He was crushed between the two vehicles and sustained severe head injuries. He was subsequently taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Upon receiving the news, Md Matiar Rahman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sonadanga Police Station, visited the scene. He said the deceased's family did not wish to file a formal case. The body will be handed over to the family after the completion of necessary legal procedures. However, Barek has been absconding since the incident, and details of the incident will be clarified once he is located.
KCC Chief Engineer Md Moshiuzzaman Khan also visited the site after hearing the news. He described the incident as an accident but said the matter would be investigated.
