The Coast Guard seized 410,000 yaba tablets and 21.5kg of heroin from the sea near Saint Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar. The estimated value of the seized drugs is Tk 42 crore.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Coast Guard, confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.

He said the Coast Guard regularly conducts patrols and operations in the sea around Saint Martin’s Island to prevent drug and human trafficking as well as smuggling.

As part of the ongoing operations, a special drive was conducted around 6am on Thursday based on a tip-off in the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) area between Bangladesh and Myanmar, near Saint Martin’s Island.

During the operation, the Coast Guard signalled a suspicious engine-powered wooden boat to stop. Sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, the suspected smugglers on board threw three sacks into the sea and fled towards Myanmar’s maritime territory.

The Coast Guard team later recovered the floating sacks and searched them. They found 410,000 yaba tablets and 21.5kg of heroin inside.

The Coast Guard media officer said legal procedures regarding the seized drugs are underway.
