An eight-year-old schoolboy died after falling into a river from a bridge near Karallachhari Bazar in Longadu upazila of Rangamati on Thursday.
The accident occurred around noon when the child, identified as Rafi, was returning home from school.
According to locals, Rafi fell into the water after accidentally slipping from the bridge while crossing it. Seeing the incident, local residents immediately went into the river and tried to rescue him.
They later rescued the child and took him to a nearby hospital, where the on duty doctor examined him and declared him dead.
The child’s sudden death has cast a pall of grief over the area. Family members and relatives were seen mourning the tragedy, while local residents expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
Residents said the bridge near Karallachhari Bazar is used by a large number of people every day, including schoolchildren. They said greater attention should be given to the safety of the bridge and its surroundings.
Following the accident, concern has grown among local residents. They called for stronger safety measures, including installing necessary railings on the bridge, and urged guardians to remain more cautious when children use the route.
Local administration and law enforcement agencies are collecting necessary information regarding the incident.
