A Dhaka court on Thursday placed eight accused on three-day remand in a case filed over an attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order after Shah Ali Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Atowar Rahman, also the case investigation officer, sought five days remand for the accused.
The remanded accused are Md Shahadat Hossain, Kazi Mokbul Hossain, Md Shah Alam, Md Atikur Rahman, Md Kamrul Islam, Md Nur Alam, Md Rafiqul Islam Jinnah alias Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Md Sazzad Hossain Mishu.
Defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand and bail, while the prosecution opposed the petitions. After hearing both sides, the court granted three days remand.
Police have so far arrested 14 people in connection with the case.
According to the case statement, a group of people armed with hammers, sticks and local weapons entered the Radda MCH-FP Centre around midnight on September 25. They allegedly assaulted and tied up two night guards before breaking the main gate and entering the premises with an excavator.
The attackers allegedly vandalised several semi-pucca rooms, including those used for family planning services and by the clinic’s officials, as well as doors and windows of the ultrasound, vaccination and laboratory rooms.
They also allegedly looted medicines and other supplies, two ultrasound machines, a generator, two computers, two printers, three refrigerators, three air conditioners and three steel cabinets.
Dr Nasrin Akhter, executive director of the Radda MCH-FP Centre, filed the case with Shah Ali Police Station on September 26. Md Hanif Mia was named as an accused, along with 200–250 unidentified people.
