The body of a 14-year-old schoolgirl, who had been missing for a day, was recovered from a paddy field in Lalmai of Cumilla, on Thursday. Police also recovered an abandoned CNG-run auto-rickshaw near the body.

The deceased was identified as Jannatul Tazmin, daughter of Abdul Alim of Churamonkati Union in Jashore Sadar upazila. She was a Class VII student at Farida Vidyayatan in Cumilla city.

The body was recovered from farmland near Manumura Jungle in Jagatpur Uttarpara of Perul North Union around Thursday. Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter in the evening.

According to local resident Tamal Banik, locals became suspicious after spotting an abandoned CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the Manumura area beside the Kachikata-Harishchar Bazar road.

They later went about 50 yards from the road into the farmland and found the body of a girl lying beside a field ridge. A gamcha was wrapped around her neck and her face was pressed into the soil, locals said.

The girl’s father, Abdul Alim, said Tazmin left their rented home in the Racecourse Dhanmondi area of Cumilla on October 4, telling the family that she was going to visit a female friend. She later travelled to Cox’s Bazar with the friend.

He said he spoke to his daughter by phone after she got off near Hotel Nurjahan in the Cumilla Biswa Road area around 2am on Wednesday after returning from Cox’s Bazar. He could not contact her afterward and tried to track her phone location the following morning.

After learning that the phone was located in the Lalmai Police Station area, Abdul Alim began searching for his daughter. He later learned that her body had been recovered from farmland in the Jagatpur area.

The father demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for his daughter’s death.

OC Mizanur Rahman said the body was initially recovered as unidentified in the morning and her identity was established in the afternoon.

The body was sent to the morgue of Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, he said.

The OC added that several people have been questioned in connection with the incident and police are investigating to uncover what actually happened.
