Twelve fishermen were detained for catching fish in defiance of a ban in the Meghna River in Raipur, Lakshmipur, on Thursday (October 8).
A mobile court fined 11 fishermen Tk 2,000 each, totalling Tk 22,000. The remaining detainee, a minor, was released into his guardian’s custody after signing a bond.
The Fisheries Department and Coast Guard conducted the drive in the morning and seized illegal fishing nets, which were later burned and destroyed at Saju Molla’s fish landing station.
Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md Mahfuzul Hasnain said the government had imposed a 22-day ban on fishing to protect mother hilsa during the peak breeding season.
He warned that regular drives would continue and legal action would be taken against anyone violating the ban.
