Jannatul Tazmin, a Class Seven student whose body was recovered from a paddy field in Cumilla’s Lalm Sadar area, was buried beside her grandfather at a family graveyard in Jashore on Friday.
Her funeral prayer was held at 11:00 AM in Chhatiantala village under Jashore Sadar upazila before she was laid to rest. Her parents, who lost their only child, were left devastated. Relatives and local residents called for those involved in her death to be identified and brought to justice.
Tazmin’s body arrived at her village home late on Thursday night, plunging her family and the community into grief. Neighbours gathered at the house on Friday to console her parents and relatives.
Tazmin was the daughter of Abdul Alim, a resident of Mallikpara in Chhatiantala under Churamankati union of Jashore Sadar. She lived with her family in Cumilla, where her father worked for a pharmaceutical company. She was a student of Class Seven at the local Farida Vidyayatan.
Police recovered her body from a paddy field in Jagatpur area of Lalm Sadar upazila in Cumilla on Thursday morning.
Abdul Alim said his daughter left home on October 4, telling the family she was going to visit a friend. When they contacted her by phone at different times, she said she was staying at the friend’s house.
He said a message and live location were sent from his daughter’s phone at around 1:45 AM on Thursday, asking him to come and collect her. As he was asleep at the time, he did not see the message. After noticing it in the morning, he went to the location and found his daughter’s body.
Tazmin’s mother, Keya Khatun, said she last spoke to her daughter on Thursday afternoon. Tazmin told her she was at a friend’s house and asked her to come and take her home. However, she did not disclose the friend’s name or provide details about the friend’s parents, her mother said. Keya called for the friend to be questioned to help uncover the circumstances of her daughter’s death.
Abdul Alim said he did not want to accuse anyone personally at this stage. He said he wanted to know what had happened to his daughter and who had killed her, urging authorities to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
According to local residents, Tazmin was her parents’ only child and was academically talented. She used to visit her village home with her parents during holidays. Her death has left her family and the community in mourning.
Police said their preliminary investigation found that Tazmin had remained in contact with her family after leaving home on October 4. She travelled from Cumilla to Cox’s Bazar and left for Cumilla by bus on Wednesday afternoon. Police said she got off the bus in front of Nurjahan Hotel at Paduar Bazar in Cumilla at around 10:30 PM.
Investigators are trying to establish how she reached the spot in Lalm Sadar after getting off the bus.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Cumilla Sadar South Circle Mostain Billah Ferdous said police were trying to collect CCTV footage from locations between Nurjahan Hotel and the crime scene. Investigators were also looking into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw that Tazmin may have used.
Cumilla Superintendent of Police Anisuzzaman said a gamcha had been wrapped around Tazmin’s neck. Signs of running and a struggle were found in four to five paddy fields near the scene. Investigators initially suspect that she tried to flee to save her life.
A murder case was filed with Lalm Sadar Police Station against unidentified accused, with Tazmin’s father as the complainant. Police detained a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver named Sumon in Chattogram city on Friday morning. He is being questioned.
Police said they were planning a press briefing to provide details and updates on the investigation.
