Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has said no more hawkers will be allowed to occupy public footpaths, adding that the government is working to control auto-rickshaws.
He made the remarks on Friday at a campaign titled ‘Let’s Remake July Graffiti’, organised by the DNCC on metro rail pillars in Mirpur.
Shafiqul Islam Khan said all footpaths under the DNCC, including those in Mirpur-10, would be cleared of illegal hawkers and reopened to the public. The two city corporations are also working to control auto-rickshaws, he added.
The administrator said the authorities had decided to remove posters from metro rail pillars and paint graffiti within 72 hours. He added that the initiative would not be politicised and that the graffiti would feature people who played roles in the country's movements and struggles.
He alleged that leaders and activists of different political parties had appeared on the streets in the name of an auto-rickshaw movement.
“There is not a single person in Bangladesh who would take to the streets to protest in support of auto-rickshaws,” he said, urging political leaders to stand with the people and support democratic practices.
Shafiqul Islam Khan called for unity and urged people to support the positive initiatives taken by the government and the city corporation. He said criticism was part of democracy but warned that freedom did not mean people could do whatever they wanted.
He said footpaths across Dhaka would be freed from illegal occupation and that local residents' cooperation would be sought to resolve problems in areas where difficulties remained.
The administrator also alleged that a political party was encouraging those occupying footpaths to reclaim them. He warned that any attempt to occupy public footpaths would be resisted with the support of the people.
