Around Tk 3 crore was looted from a distributor of mobile financial service provider Bkash in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Friday evening, leaving one person shot and two others injured.

The incident took place around 6:30 PM in the Karnapur area on the Sreepur-Gosinga regional road.

The injured were identified as Himel, an accounts manager who sustained gunshot wounds, private car driver Lal Mia and area manager Farhad.

Himel was given initial treatment at Sreepur Hospital before being referred to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.

Mostafizur Rahman, manager of Valuka Channel Enterprise Limited, a Bkash distributor operating in Sreepur, said the company operates its Bkash business from Mawna Chowrasta in the upazila.

As all banks were closed on Friday and there was increased demand for cash to pay garment workers’ salaries, the distributor faced a cash shortage.

Following Bkash procedures, the company was bringing cash by private car from Hazrat Ali Munshi, a Bkash distributor in Narsingdi Sadar, after transferring the corresponding Bkash balance.

When the car reached Karnapur around 6:30 PM, a group of miscreants arriving on 10 to 12 motorcycles intercepted the vehicle.

The attackers smashed the car windows with locally made weapons, including Chinese axes, before pulling out a pistol and shooting at the accounts manager.

Four crore taka was being transported in three plastic sacks inside the car. The attackers fled with two of the sacks, and the amount looted is estimated to be around Tk 3 crore.

Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station Mohammad Shahinur Alam said, "police had launched an investigation after receiving information about the incident."

Police were collecting information from the scene and the injured, he said, adding that legal action would be taken following an investigation.
