Two crude bombs, locally known as cocktails, were thrown in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in the capital’s Tejgaon area early Saturday, with one exploding and the other recovered by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Bomb Disposal Unit.
The incident took place around 1:15am at an intersection on the road from Agargaon towards Jahangir Gate, when two individuals riding a motorcycle allegedly threw the explosives before fleeing the scene.
Ibn-e-Mizan, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Tejgaon Division, confirmed the incident.
According to police, the motorcycle-borne assailants threw two cocktails, one of which exploded. Members of the DMP’s Bomb Disposal Unit later recovered the unexploded device.
Police personnel from the Tejgaon Division visited the scene following the incident and began taking necessary measures.
Members of the Bomb Disposal Unit examined the device at the scene. According to preliminary police findings, no shrapnel was found in the recovered device. Police said it appeared to contain firecracker-like explosive material.
Police said the two suspects fled towards Kafrul via Agargaon after the incident. Their identities remain unknown.
Investigators have so far been unable to identify the motorcycle’s registration number from nearby CCTV footage, as shops in the area were closed at the time of the incident.
Police are collecting information to identify the suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
