Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, acting Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and an adviser to the Prime Minister, has described threats to stop remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis as extremely anti-national and inhumane acts. He said remittances are one of the key driving forces behind the livelihoods of millions of families and the national economy. Conspiring to stop them for political purposes is tantamount to keeping people hungry.
He made these remarks while addressing a prize-giving ceremony, discussion and cultural programme organised on Friday (October 9) at the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University, focusing on an essay competition on the life and work of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Zia Smriti Pathagar and ‘Komol Kuri’ jointly organised the event.
Referring to the recent disorder at the airport, Rizvi said protests could be held against injustice and mismanagement, and press conferences could also be organised. However, attacks on officials performing their duties or creating disorder are unacceptable. He also remarked that launching programmes such as a ‘remittance shutdown’ to gain political advantage goes against the national interest.
