BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has said members of the Sanatan Hindu community have turned away from the “fascist Awami League” and joined BNP adding that his party would not disappoint them.

He made the remarks on Friday, October 9, while speaking as the chief guest at a financial assistance distribution programme for priests from 46 Durga Puja mandaps at Panchabati Ashram in Savar.

Gayeshwar said, "the Awami League would benefit if members of the Hindu community left the country, as it could then occupy their properties, while their continued presence would allow the party to secure their votes."

He added that the current government would seek to win the confidence of the Hindu community through its actions.

Gayeshwar also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had provided Tk 5 crore in financial assistance for this year’s Durga Puja celebrations by the Hindu community for the first time. He added that 600 kilogrammes of rice were being allocated to each puja mandap and that further assistance had been provided through the Hindu Welfare Trust.

Addressing law enforcement agencies, he urged them not to assume that nothing would happen during the community’s biggest religious festival and called for comprehensive security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents.

The programme was chaired by Khorhsed Alam, former joint general secretary of Dhaka District BNP.

Local lawmaker Dr Dewan Mohammad Salauddin Babu, former Jaksu vice-president Ashraf Khan, Dhaka District Swechchhasebak Dal convener Nazmul Hasan Abhi, Dhaka District Chhatra Dal president Tamiz Uddin, leaders of the Puja Celebration Council and members of law enforcement agencies were also present.
