Police recovered the body of a 25-year-old man from beside a highway in front of the main gate of the under construction Patuakhali Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Sadar upazila early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Abbas Sikder son of Md Rafiq Sikder of Pochakoralia village in Ward No. 2 of Auliapur Union. He had reportedly been away from home for two days following a clash in the area.

According to local sources, an autorickshaw driver called Abbas’s uncle, Shahjalal, on Friday night and informed him that Abbas was lying ill in front of the EPZ. Relatives rushed to the spot and found him dead.

Locals suspected that Abbas might have died after being assaulted, but the circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established.

Abbas’s father, Rafiq Sikder, alleged that his son had a dispute with a group in the area. He claimed the hostility increased after he posted election-related posters on Facebook ahead of a possible bid for union parishad membership. He demanded justice for those responsible for his son’s death.

Officer-in-Charge of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Md Moniruzzaman said, "police recovered the body after being sent to the scene. Necessary legal steps would be taken following an autopsy," he added.
