Videos showing children being chained and physically abused at a madrasa in Ramgati municipality of Lakshmipur have gone viral on Facebook, sparking outrage among locals.
The incidents reportedly took place at Alexander Madrasa-e Babut Taqwa in Ward 6. The videos show children being slapped, hit with a ruler and repeatedly struck on the head. Photos also show two children chained to a window. Other teachers allegedly watched the abuse.
Parents said the children were too afraid to speak about the mistreatment at home. They demanded action against those responsible and called for the authorities to ensure the students’ safety.
Assistant teacher Abdul Matin admitted the incident and apologised on behalf of the head teacher. Head teacher Habibullah Nirab said the teacher involved had been dismissed and denied his own involvement.
Ramgati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehsan Uddin said the head teacher was absconding and legal action would be taken. He added that parents had visited him but had not submitted a written complaint.
Established in 2025, the madrasa has around 150 students from nursery to third grade.
