Bangladesh Open University (BOU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan has stressed the importance of properly implementing the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum to improve education quality and prepare students for global competition.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a day-long workshop titled ‘Teaching and Assessment in OBE Curriculum’, organised by the Department of History of the University of Dhaka at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room on BOU’s Gazipur campus on Saturday.

The vice-chancellor said the OBE curriculum would play a vital role in ensuring quality education beyond the conventional examination- and certificate-based system. He emphasised the need for teacher training and workshops to ensure its effective implementation, adding that the initiative of the Department of History could serve as a model for other departments.

Special guest Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Sarkar, dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Dhaka, said experienced teachers’ expertise should be utilised for the successful implementation of the OBE curriculum. He expressed hope that the workshop would help address limitations in teaching and assessment and contribute to improving educational quality.

Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Jinnah, pro-vice-chancellor of the National University, also attended the programme as a special guest. Professor Dr Ashfaq Hossain, chairperson of the Department of History at the University of Dhaka, presided over the event.

Professor Dr Mohammad Abul Kawsar of the Department of History served as the resource person and discussed the importance and implementation of the OBE curriculum, along with student assessment methods. Teachers of the department participated in the workshop.
