AkijBashir Group has joined RE100, becoming the first company from Bangladesh to join the global corporate renewable energy initiative. Led by Climate Group, RE100 brings together more than 400 businesses worldwide committed to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2050 at the latest.

Through this commitment, the Group is reinforcing its transition towards 100% renewable electricity across its operations and placing clean power at the centre of its long-term strategy for responsible industrial growth, says a press release.

Sk Bashir Uddin, Managing Director of AkijBashir Group, said: “Joining RE100 marks an important step towards sustainable growth and 100% renewable electricity. As the first Bangladeshi company to join this global initiative, we aim to support a cleaner and more resilient energy future while encouraging other businesses to embrace renewable energy.”

For a diversified industrial group like AkijBashir, RE100 provides a globally recognised framework to make its renewable energy journey more structured, measurable and transparent. Membership strengthens accountability, enables international benchmarking and connects the Group with businesses tackling similar challenges in scaling up renewable electricity.

The RE100 commitment builds on significant renewable energy investments already underway. Across its particle board, ceramics, glass and other manufacturing facilities, AkijBashir Group has developed around 90 MW of solar generation capacity and continues to expand its portfolio.

Key projects include: A 24.39 MWp rooftop solar system at Akij Ceramics in Trishal, expected to generate about 28,050 MWh of clean electricity annually and reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by roughly 22,440 tonnes each year. Of the total capacity, 10 MW is connected to the national grid through net metering.

An 18.2 MW rooftop solar system with battery storage at AkijBashir Glass in Habiganj. The facility also uses waste-heat recovery and sources 71% of its energy from renewable sources.

Janata Jute Mills meets its entire electricity demand through rooftop solar power and battery storage.

An 8.1 MWp rooftop solar system at Akij Particle Board Mills is projected to generate 9.3 million kWh of electricity annually and avoid around 7,452 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
