International Day of the Girl Child is being observed across the globe today, Sunday (October 11), with calls to eliminate gender discrimination and safeguard the fundamental rights of young girls.
The global theme for 2026 is "End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls' Rights", emphasizing that protecting girls extends beyond abolishing harmful traditional practices to actively securing their access to education, healthcare, social safety, and leadership opportunities.
Various organizations, civil society groups, and international bodies across the world are holding seminars, rallies, and awareness campaigns to mark the occasion.
The observance aims to advocate for equal rights, enhance access to education and healthcare, eliminate gender-based violence, and foster leadership capabilities among young girls.
The United Nations General Assembly officially designated the day through a resolution adopted on December 19, 2011. The international day was first commemorated worldwide on October 11, 2012.
