Four arrested over bid to deface Rabindranath graffiti

Police have shown four people arrested in a case filed over an alleged attempt to deface and damage graffiti of Rabindranath Tagore on a wall in front of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segunbagicha of Dhaka.

The case also includes allegations of making provocative statements, engaging in anti-state activities and attempting to undermine religious harmony.

Sheikh Zahidul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division, confirmed the case on Sunday (October 11).

Shahbagh Police Station filed the case as the complainant. The case number is 11. Charges have been brought under Sections 120B, 153A and 295A of the Penal Code.

Earlier, police detained four people, including a woman, on Saturday afternoon (October 10) over the alleged attempt to deface and damage the graffiti in front of Shilpakala Academy.

They were subsequently shown arrested in the case filed against them.

Police said, whether the detainees were affiliated with any political organization was not a consideration, adding that legal action was being taken against them as accused in the case.

The arrested individuals were identified as ANM Ayas, 29, son of Mostafa, of 95/A Elephant Road in New Market, Dhaka; Md Sakibul Hasan, 19, son of Hormuz Ali, of Pakuria in Sherpur Sadar upazila; Md Sujon Mia, 18, son of Solaiman, of Ward 7 in Lakshmipur municipality; and Marzia Khandaker Rimi, 27, daughter of Mostak Ahmed Khandaker, of Fakirapur in Burichang upazila, Cumilla.
