Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud claimed a brilliant hat-trick as Bangladesh delivered a devastating early morning spell on Day 3 of the one-off Abu Dhabi Test, leaving Afghanistan reeling after losing four wickets for just one run.
Responding to Bangladesh's first-innings total of 346, Afghanistan resumed the third day on 211 for 4. However, pacers Ebadot Hossain and Hasan Mahmud tore through the hosts' middle and lower order in quick succession.
Ebadot Hossain triggered the collapse in the third over of the morning, clean bowling Ikram Alikhil for 32.
Hasan Mahmud then took centre stage in the following over. The pacer uprooted the off-stump of Ismat Alam (1) with a sharp delivery, before inducing an outside edge from Qais Ahmad (0) on the very next ball, which was safely held by wicketkeeper Litton Das.
On the hat-trick ball, Hasan drew an appeal against Zia-ur-Rehman as the ball passed the bat into Litton's gloves. Although the on-field umpire initially turned down the appeal, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opted for a Decision Review System (DRS) referral.
Replays confirmed that while the ball missed the bat, it struck the pad in line and was projected to hit off-stump, overturning the decision to lbw and completing a remarkable hat-trick for Hasan Mahmud.
At the time of reporting, Afghanistan were struggling at 221 for 8 in their first innings, with middle-order batter Rahmat Shah holding firm on an unbeaten 87 as he approaches a century.
