Police have shown four individuals, including a leader of an organization called Rashtra Sanglap Forum, arrested in a sedition case for defacing a mural of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in front of the Shilpakala Academy in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.
Confirming the development on Sunday (October 11), Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Moniruzzaman stated that the suspects were shown arrested under anti-state activity charges in connection with the incident.
The arrested individuals have been identified as A. N. M. Ayash (29), member secretary of Rashtra Sanglap Forum, alongside Md. Sakibul Hasan (19), Md. Sujon Miah (18), and Marzia Khondokar Rimi (27).
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when Ayash and his associates attempted to smear lime wash over the mural painted on the boundary wall outside Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Police intercepted the group at the scene and initially took them into custody for questioning before formally filing sedition charges.
The wall artwork was created recently after the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) cleared illegal encroachments along the Segunbagicha pavement on October 5. To beautify the public space, local authorities commissioned murals of ten eminent cultural figures, including Rabindranath Tagore, Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, Satyajit Ray, and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
