Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has urged engineers and technology professionals to develop affordable solutions to Bangladesh’s problems, stressing the need to align technological innovation with the country’s realities and people’s needs.

He made the call while addressing the 38th convocation of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) in Gazipur on Sunday as the chief guest.

The minister said innovation and engineering knowledge should be used to solve various challenges facing the country, with particular attention to ensuring access to essential services for people who cannot afford expensive technologies and solutions.

He said education achieves its true purpose when people use their knowledge and skills to improve the lives of others. Graduates should therefore dedicate themselves to serving the country and society, he added.

Addressing IUT students, Milon said they were entering professional life at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) and rapid technological advances were constantly creating new challenges. He urged them to develop the skills needed to use emerging technologies and tools effectively.

He expressed hope that the graduates would apply their knowledge and creativity to contribute to Bangladesh’s development and progress.

Describing convocation as a major milestone in students’ lives, the minister said it recognised years of hard work and dedication. He added that the occasion was also a moment of fulfilment for parents whose sacrifices had helped their children succeed and a source of pride for teachers seeing their students prepare for the next stage of life.

Highlighting IUT’s significance in Bangladesh, Milon said the country’s longstanding relationship with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was valuable and that the university represented a practical manifestation of those ties.

He said students from different countries and cultural backgrounds came to IUT to pursue higher education, making it a common platform for learning. The relationships built at the university could develop into long-term partnerships in research, industry and education, he added.

The minister also expressed hope that IUT would play an important role in strengthening cooperation among the countries concerned. He thanked the OIC and its member states for their continued support for the university.

Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin and former Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) professor Dr Md Kaykobad also addressed the convocation as speakers. IUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Mamun Bin Ibne Riaz delivered the welcome address.

A total of 659 students received undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the convocation. Seven students were awarded gold medals for their academic achievements.

Sumaiya Ahmed Rani of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering received the OIC Gold Medal, while six other students received IUT Gold Medals. The education minister presented the medals and certificates to the recipients.
