Two students were injured in a clash between activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Kushtia Polytechnic Institute on Sunday, following a dispute over a procession welcoming newly admitted students.
The tension erupted on the campus around noon, leading to several rounds of chases and counter-chases between the two groups. The situation returned to normal around 6:15PM following talks involving the college administration, police and leaders of the two organisations.
According to local residents, general students and police sources, both Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir had been operating help desks at the institute for the past three days to assist students seeking admission for the 2026 academic session. The two organisations organised processions on Sunday to welcome the newcomers.
The situation escalated when a dispute arose over the participation of students in the procession, triggering verbal altercations that later turned into clashes. Two students were injured in the incident.
Kushtia district Chhatra Shibir secretary Jubayer Ahmed said a misunderstanding over the participation of junior students in a programme had led to an argument and physical altercation between the two groups. He said the injured students and those involved in the incident were general students with different ideological affiliations.
He added that representatives of Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, the college administration and the police later held discussions and resolved the dispute.
Mohammad Maruf Hossain Pias, former member secretary of Kushtia Polytechnic Institute Chhatra Dal, said the procession had been organised to welcome newly admitted students. He claimed that some students faced obstruction while attempting to join the procession, leading to a verbal altercation and misunderstanding.
Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Zakir Hossain said the incident stemmed from an internal misunderstanding among students and was not linked to any major political issue. He said the college principal and police jointly intervened to resolve the matter and that the overall situation on the campus remained peaceful.
