MADARIPUR, Oct 11: Leaders and activists of social organisations and concerned citizens formed a human chain on Saturday to demand the protection of Shakuni Lake, a traditional landmark in the town.

The programme began at about 10 am on the banks of the lake. Afterward, participants submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC), urging authorities to remove illegal structures along the lake and take measures to prevent water pollution.

Participants included Madaripur District Freedom Fighter Commander Habibul Alam, valiant freedom fighter and physician Golam Sarwar, Conscious Citizens Committee President Khan Mohammad Shahid, Enayet Hossain Nannu, lawyer Mashiur Rahman Parvez and Baijid Miah, along with representatives of 10 social organisations and people from various walks of life.

Speakers said Shakuni Lake is an important part of Madaripur’s history, heritage and civic life. They recalled that residents and visitors once regularly visited the lake to enjoy its natural beauty and pleasant surroundings.

However, they said, mismanagement, environmental pollution and inadequate maintenance have threatened the lake’s environment and appearance.

The speakers called on the authorities to identify and remove illegal structures along the lake’s banks, stop waste dumping and ensure regular cleaning. They also urged officials to identify sources of pollution and take appropriate measures to protect the lake’s water quality and biodiversity.

They warned that continued pollution could harm the surrounding environment and aquatic life, emphasising the need for immediate and effective action to preserve the lake.

In the memorandum, the participants requested that the DC coordinate measures to remove illegal structures, prevent water pollution, and protect the lake’s natural environment and beauty.

The participants said protecting Shakuni Lake would require a long-term plan and coordinated efforts by the district administration, municipal authorities, environmental agencies, social organisations and local residents.
