The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will try to nominate a single candidate for each constituency in the upcoming local government elections, Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam Moni has said.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting of ruling-party lawmakers at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday (October 11), Moni said the BNP’s extensive grassroots organisation would help the party select a single candidate for each contest.
He noted that the elections would not be held under party symbols this year, unlike in the past, and said the party wanted the polls to take place in a united and festive atmosphere.
Moni added that the elections should produce representatives who are acceptable to the public and capable of representing local communities.
He said the party would take action if anyone contested against its decisions, although no discussion on the matter had taken place yet.
The chief whip also warned that the BNP would not tolerate extortionists or land grabbers, saying the Prime Minister had issued clear instructions on the issue.
