Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said that discussions were held with the Turkish government on the Makkah Accord, education, the readymade garment (RMG) sector and other issues during his recent visit to Turkey.
He made the remarks while talking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday morning after returning home from Turkey and performing Umrah in Saudi Arabia.
Dr Shafiq said one of the main objectives of attending an international conference in Turkey was to present Bangladesh on the international stage.
Expressing concern over the current global situation, he said the world was passing through a period of instability. No form of attack was beneficial to the world, he said, adding that peace should be restored through dialogue.
The Jamaat chief left Dhaka on October 7 to attend the Second International Conference on Bangladesh Studies at Istanbul University in Turkey.
During his visit, he met Turkish Parliament Speaker Professor Dr Numan Kurtulmus on October 8. Akif Yilmaz, chairman of the Turkey Parliament's Bangladesh Friendship Group, and senior officials were also present at the meeting.
On October 9, Dr Shafiq attended the conference as the chief guest and delivered a speech. Academics, policymakers, diplomats, researchers and representatives of various organisations from Bangladesh, Turkey and other countries took part in the event.
